Motocross Clicker Tuning: A Simple Test Method for Compression and Rebound
How to make suspension adjustments that produce useful information instead of a notebook full of random settings.
Write down the baseline before touching anything
Count each adjuster using the suspension maker’s convention and record the current position. Many clickers are referenced as clicks out from gently seated, but not every adjuster uses the same direction or range. Never force an adjuster against its stop. If you do not know what the adjuster controls, identify it from the manual before turning it.
Also record sag, tire pressures, track condition and approximate fuel load. Suspension feedback without context is hard to reproduce.
Define one symptom in one section
“The bike feels bad” is not a tuning symptom. “The rear kicks upward on the third and fourth braking bump,” “the fork dives too far under hard braking,” or “the front deflects sideways on small square edges” is actionable. Pick one problem and one repeatable part of the track.
Ride the section several times at a consistent pace. If the symptom happens once after a bad line and never repeats, do not rebuild the setup around it.
Change one adjuster in a small step
Make a small documented change to the most relevant circuit. Ride enough laps to understand it. If the symptom improves but a new problem appears, note both. If nothing changes, that information is useful too—it may mean the circuit is not controlling the behavior or the change was too small to distinguish from track variation.
Avoid adjusting front and rear compression/rebound simultaneously. Multiple changes may create a better feel, but you will not know which one helped.
Return to baseline when the test becomes confused
Clicker tuning often goes wrong after three or four undocumented changes. If the motorcycle starts feeling worse everywhere, return to the recorded baseline and begin again. A known mediocre setup is more useful than an unknown one.
If clickers are near extreme ends of their range to make the bike tolerable, spring rate, oil height, internal valving or service condition may need attention. Clickers are trim adjustments, not unlimited repair tools.
Use rider fatigue as feedback
A setup that is theoretically fast but requires constant correction may not be useful for a full practice day. Track whether the motorcycle becomes easier to hold on line and whether the rider can maintain body position deeper into a session. Reduced fatigue can be a legitimate improvement.
Save successful settings by surface type—deep sand, groomed loam, hardpack, mud—then use them as starting points, not immutable recipes. Track prep and rider speed still change the required setup.
