Final-drive ratio is rear sprocket teeth divided by front sprocket teeth. A larger numerical ratio generally increases rear-wheel torque multiplication and reduces road/track speed at the same engine rpm and transmission gear.

This tool compares ratios only. Actual speed also depends on internal gear ratios, primary reduction, rear-tire circumference and engine rpm.

How to use this tool

Enter the current front/rear tooth counts and the proposed combination. Final-drive ratio is rear teeth divided by front teeth. A larger number is lower gearing: more torque multiplication and less vehicle speed at the same engine rpm, all else equal.

Use the percentage change to compare combinations before buying sprockets. Then verify chain length, axle-adjustment range, slider/guide clearance and any manufacturer limits on sprocket size.

Worked example

Changing from 13/50 to 13/52 moves the numerical ratio from 3.846 to 4.000, a 4.00% increase. The bike will be about four percent lower geared before considering tire growth, wheelspin or transmission differences.

Using it at the track

Final-drive changes are especially useful to compare before a sandy track or a course with a long straight. Lower gearing can help the motorcycle stay in a useful part of the powerband but may add shifting or reduce speed in a gear. Taller gearing can calm wheelspin or reduce shifting in some sections but may make the engine labor elsewhere.

Compare the percentage change rather than looking only at tooth count. One tooth on the front is a much larger ratio change than one tooth on the rear. After any change, check chain adjustment, sprocket/guide clearance and axle position before riding.

Limit: This comparison does not predict lap time or exact top speed. Engine powerband, tire circumference, transmission ratios, wheelspin and track layout still determine how the change feels.
